Most koi pond glass installations that fail do not fail because of the glass. The glass is the last thing to go. What gives way first is the silicone bond, and almost every time it happens for one of three reasons: the rebate was the wrong size, the cement had not cured properly before the panel went in, or the expansion gap was skipped because it did not look like it would matter. - Neutral-cure, pond-safe silicone sealant (aquarium-grade)
- Silicone gun
- Pond liner cut larger than the opening
- Plastic packers (5mm)
- Masking tape
- Tape measure
- Utility knife
- Spirit level
- Safety gloves

Build the rebate to the correct dimensions
The rebate is the channel the glass sits inside. Cut it 45mm wide, at a depth that matches your glass thickness. Not approximately. Exactly.
The opening needs to be 6 to 10mm larger than the glass panel on every side. Builders sometimes read that and assume the gap is a fault tolerance or something to fill with extra sealant. It is not. That space is where the silicone bond forms under pressure. Fill it wrong and the bond will not seat correctly.

Wait for the cement to cure fully before you go near it with glass
A freshly rendered pond can take two to four weeks to cure. Sometimes more if the weather is cold. This is the step most people rush, and it is also the one that causes the most failures. Installing glass into a rebate that is still moving gives the bond nowhere stable to grip.
The glass holds. The bond does not. Give it the time.

Confirm the glass specification before ordering
Pond glass is made to order. There is no stock size waiting in a warehouse. You order it, it gets fabricated, it arrives 12 to 14 working days later, and by then the rebate either fits or it does not. The thickness decision has to happen before a single brick is laid.
A 21.5mm pond glass window (two layers of 10mm toughened glass with a 1.5mm EVA interlayer) covers ponds up to 400mm deep and 1,400mm wide. That is the structural limit of that specification. Deeper or wider and you move to a 25.5mm koi pond glass panel or a 39mm panel depending on the exact dimensions. Getting this wrong is not an expensive inconvenience. Position the liner through the opening before anything else
The liner goes in before the glass. Not at the same time. Before.
Feed it through the opening and press it flat against the rebate surface. It needs to extend at least 40mm onto the glass contact area on the three sides sitting inside the brickwork. Measure that before you cut anything. Then masking tape the glass face 40mm in from those three edges. That line marks exactly where the bond goes and stops silicone smearing the visible face of the panel.

Apply silicone in parallel beads to both surfaces
Apply roughly 10 parallel beads across the bond area. To both surfaces, not just one. Both the rebate and the glass face get silicone before the panel goes in.
When the glass is pressed into position those beads flatten together under the weight and form one continuous bond. That is the point of the multiple beads. Apply the silicone over the liner surface on the brickwork side, not directly onto the blocks underneath it.

Set the glass on packers, check every gap, then seal the perimeter
Lay your 5mm plastic packers along the base of the rebate first. The glass sits on the packers, not on the sealant. Without them, the weight of the panel squeezes all the silicone out from underneath and the bottom of the bond is gone before the pond fills.
Lower the panel onto the packers and press it evenly into the silicone. Then stop and check the gap on all four sides. Three to five millimetres of clear space between the glass edge and the brickwork, every side, before anything begins to set. Glass expands with heat. A panel sitting flush to the rebate in February is under real pressure by July, and that pressure either fractures the sealant or the glass itself.
Once the gaps are right, run the final perimeter bead and smooth it flat.
What silicone should you use to install pond glass?
Neutral-cure silicone only. Not waterproof bathroom silicone. Neutral-cure, rated for constant water contact.
The stuff you will find at most hardware shops is acetoxy-cure. It is cheaper, more available, and smells strongly of vinegar while it sets. That smell is acetic acid being released. In a sealed pond environment the concentration builds quickly, and it is enough to kill fish. Dow Corning 795 and Geocel 4500 are the products most commonly used in the trade for this application. Check the datasheet before you buy rather than relying on the label. Waterproof and fish safe are not the same thing.
Every side of the glass needs 3 to 5mm of clear space between the edge and the brickwork. A panel installed flush to the rebate in winter will be under significant pressure come summer. Sealant failure is the best outcome. In some cases the glass fractures. There is no correcting this after the fact without removing the panel entirely.
What to expect once the panel is in
Glass does not need much once it is installed. That is part of why it is used.
Algae builds on the viewing face over time. Every pond window gets it. It does not mean anything is wrong with the glass or the bond. A soft cloth clears it. Abrasive pads scratch the surface, and that scratch is permanent. Worth knowing before you grab whatever cleaning tool is closest.
The seal is the only thing worth actively checking. Look at the perimeter edges once a year. If there is any lifting at the edge, or if the feel of the glass has changed when you press it lightly, have the bond checked before the next season. The laminated construction means surface damage on the outer face is rarely a structural issue, but a failing perimeter seal is a different problem. How long does koi pond glass silicone need to cure before you fill the pond?
Twenty-four hours minimum. Forty-eight hours if the temperature is below around 10 degrees Celsius or the area is not well ventilated.
Do not fill the pond gradually to test the seal before the cure is complete. If water gets behind the glass while the bond is still setting, the failure will not show up immediately. It appears weeks later when the pond is full and the water pressure has been constant long enough to find the weak point. By that stage the glass needs to come out to fix it.
