Glass Skylights

In practice, very little. The two terms are used interchangeably across the UK glass industry, and plenty of specifications will use one at the top of a drawing and the other further down. Traditionally rooflight described a unit sitting flush in a flat roof and skylight described one in a pitched roof, but that distinction has largely faded and both are now fitted to flat roofs as standard. What actually matters is the specification rather than the label. Whether the unit needs to carry foot traffic, how much frame you want visible, and what thermal performance the project calls for will change what you order. The name on the enquiry won't. Yes. Any glass fitted overhead, particularly on a roof, needs to be safety glass, and toughened glass is the standard specification for that. It's roughly five times stronger than standard float glass at the same thickness. Fail it and you get small blunt fragments, not large shards raining down into the room below. That's the baseline here, not an upgrade you pay extra for.

Only if it's specified as a walk-on unit. A standard flat or frameless glass skylight isn't built to carry foot traffic and shouldn't be treated as a walkable surface. The walk on glass rooflight and switchable walk on glass skylight are engineered specifically for it, using a laminated, multi-layer toughened construction rated to take weight safely. If you need a roof that doubles as usable space above, that's the specification to ask for.

It's a skylight with an electrically controlled interlayer built into the glass. Power on, it's clear. Flick the switch and it turns opaque and frosted instead. Above a bathroom or a bedroom, that's genuinely useful. So is anywhere overlooked from next door. You get daylight on demand without giving up privacy the moment you actually want it. On the walk-on version, that privacy control comes without giving up the ability to use the roof above as usable space.

Yes. Every skylight is built to your specific roof opening rather than picked from a fixed size range, so there's no compromise on fit and no need to alter the opening to match a standard unit.
